Heatstroke (also known as “sunstroke”) is a condition in which the body’s temperature rises excessively (often above 40°C), causing the body’s temperature-regulating system to fail. It usually occurs after prolonged exposure to heat or direct sunlight and can lead to abnormal symptoms. If the warning signs are not recognized in time, it may become life-threatening.
Warning Signs
• Body temperature above 40°C
• Headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue
• Rapid breathing or irregular heartbeat
• Confusion, slurred speech, behavioral changes
• No sweating, dry and hot skin
• Seizures or loss of consciousness
High-Risk Groups
• Elderly people
• Young children
• People with obesity
• People with underlying medical conditions
Prevention
• Drink water regularly—don’t wait until thirsty
• Avoid direct sunlight during peak daytime hours
• Rest in shaded or well-ventilated areas
• Wear light, breathable clothing
• Avoid strenuous activities under the sun
First Aid
• Move the person to a shaded/cool area and loosen clothing
• Cool the body using wet cloths or cold compress
• Give small sips of water if the person is conscious
• If unconscious or having seizures, call 1669 immediately and transfer to a hospital
